Your Judges
Okay. You know that YOU are the ones voting for the People’s Choice Award at the finals of the 2018 British Street Food Awards this weekend? Well, we’ve also recruited a prestigious panel to help you. Who will be wading through the two dishes entered by each of the 17 finalists – and choosing everything from Best Main Dish, Best Vegetarian and Best Sandwich (sponsored by Hellmann’s) to Best Dessert, Best Snack, Best Burger and – the overall champion – Best Of The Best.
And what a panel it is. Richard Corrigan is a champion of British and Irish cuisine. A lover of keeping quality ingredients — and keeping things simple. Yes, he’s been crowned winner of the Great British Menu three times, but he would rather talk to you about politics. And oysters. And his butter supplier. Gizzi Erskine has just opened Mare Street Market, a food hall where she’s celebrating all things Hackney. And both love the excitement of street food.
“Having worked closely with the development of many street food traders that have gone on to become serious powerhouses in the restaurant world” says Gizzi, “I’m excited to once again judge the British Street Food Awards, because it’s winning at this event that showcases these talents and often gets them the investment and mentorship they need to make it into the big league.”
Pip Lacey, ex-head chef at Murano, won the Great British Menu in 2017. And she’s about to open her first place in London — Hicce. “Can’t wait to judge the best new street food talent in the country. Come down on Sept 21 and 22 and eat, drink, vote! It’s gonna be EPIC!” With Richard Johnson, award-winning food writer and the founder of the British Street Food Awards checking that everyone has got a glass of water, this is probably the best panel we’ve ever assembled to judge the British Street Food Awards. Ever.
