Grey Day

We love this — grey cakes from The Depressed Cake Shop which are being baked and sold to raise awareness of mental health issues. To judge by the groups that are now springing up round the world to support the venture, there are lots of us out there who are only too aware that one in four people will suffer from mental illness at some point in our lives. The Miss Cakehead website has some great examples of the bakes attempted so far — barely-decorated cakes and cookies communicating how depression can affect the ability to work, and the grey colour scheme showing how all the fun can disappear from life. The Misfortune Cookies are a stroke of genius. But the greyness isn’t forever and finite. Cut a lot of these cakes open and you’ll see flashes of colour. Depression coats everything in grey, but — at the heart of it — we have to believe there’s hope. Would be lovely to see this idea hit the streets? Any takers?
