New Prince of Wales?
We’re EXTRA excited about the Welsh Street Food Awards this year. Why? 1. The traders. 2. The judges. And 3. The hosts. DEPOT has been a cornerstone of Cardiff’s creative scene since its inception in 2015, hosting everything from street food raves to full-on festivals. Building on the venue’s success, the team launched Tiger Yard, a vibrant outdoor food court, this summer. Bingo. The perfect site for the 2023 Awards.
Once the bustling heart of Cardiff’s coal export industry, Tiger Bay has undergone a remarkable transformation. This multicultural docklands area, home to communities from over 50 different nationalities, fell into neglect post-World War II. However, the turn of the century marked a new era of regeneration, with the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage in 1999. Tiger Yard is part of the future.
Expect rainbow-coloured shipping containers, bars, seating areas AND – for one weekend only – some of the best traders in Wales competing to win a place at the British Street Food Awards finals in London. Choose from the street food classics of Ringo, the Greek flavours of Ya Souvlaki, the fresh Italian vibes of Dirty Gnocchi and Pasta Al Sugo, the boss burritos of Cosmo’s Mexicana, the top-secret menu dishes from Keralan Karavan, the cakes and bakes from Days Bakes, the vada pavs and momos from Tiffin Meal or the top tortillas from El Cabron Tacos.
It will be down to YOU who wins the People’s Choice. But choosing the champion will be our judges – James Sommerin and Kacie Morgan. James has won two Michelin stars in his career – one at The Crown at Whitebrook and another at his eponymously named restaurant in Wales – and Kacie is the respected food critic and travel blogger The Rare Welsh Bit. They will be joined by the award-winning food writer, and founder of the Awards, Richard Johnson. Both Welsh winners will go to London and, maybe, the finals of the European Street Food Awards in Germany. Get involved.
